BEACHES & NEARBY ISLANDS

· Aghia Marina

A charming, rocky little island near Yialos with chapel Aghia Marina and crystal clear waters. There is small taverna. This beach can be reached by water-taxi or by walking (around 45 mins) from Pedi

· Aghios GeorgiosDisalonas

Perhaps the most impressive beach because it has a vertical rock 300 m

· Nanou

Spacious, picturesqe bay with scattered wild cypress trees.

· Marathounta
This is a very quiet beach, reachable only by excursion boat or by road (the over –land “truck trip” to Panormitis will usually call here for a picnic lunch.
There is a small tavern.

.
Panormitis

Small, secluded bay ideal for swim and a visit to the Panormitis monastery.

Sesklia
A small islet on the southern tip of Symi with crystal clear water. Only reached by boat.

· Nimos

Small islet on the northern tip of Symi. Pebbled beach.

· Aghios Aimilianos

Extremely picturesque-a small island with a church connected to the mainland by a stone passageway-nearby you will find Maroni bay.

· Aghios Vassilios

One of the most beautiful beaches, lying on a large and deep bay framed by mountains and scattered wild cypress trees.

. Pedi Bay

The village of Pedi has a small shingle beach and is easy to reach either by bus or taxi or on foot. Boats depart here for the beaches of St. Nicholas and St. Marina. The Symi –Bus stop right next to the beach and there are number of taverns right on the beach.

· Nos

Beach - allegedly the local (nudist) police chief is trying to make this the official nudist beach and has also renamed it Paradise beach or something. It is a series of sun beds adjoining a tavern and situated with a road just above so perhaps not ideal for nudists - certainly never did notice anyone stripped off when we walked by it on several occasions. Easily reached since it is at the
end of Yialos harbour on the Emborio coast road.

· Nimborios Large, pleasant pebble bay at 25’ walk from Symi port. Reached by road, taxi or taxi boat.

· Aghios Nikolaos Sandy beach with shade provided by trees.

Reached by walking from Pedi or taxi boat.

MUSEUMS

It Is worth paying a visit to the Archaeological and Folklore Museum situated in the parish of Lieni of Ano Symi. It is housed in masion where the visitor can admire noteworthy Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine works all as folklore material.
The museum’s entrance leads to a courtyard paved mosaics, where ancient and Early Christian sculptures are displayed.
The museum’s first room is dedicated to ancient times and includes heads of statues, ancient grave stales, etc. The second room refers to monuments of the Early Christian, Byzantine and post—Byzantine period.
The third room is dedicated to post Byzantine art and presents icons from this period, small relics manuscript books, etc. In the fourth room there are depictions of the island on travellers’ maps (15th-17th century), ship models, etc.
At last the fifth room presents folkloric material reflecting the island’ past.

The Naval Museum is in Yialos and has miniature carved wooden models of ships, instruments and tools of naval craft, an old diving outfit and all the accessories of traditional sponge - fishing.

Symi has more than 13 churches and many chapels
PANORMITIS: The most important of the island and the second most important in the Dodecanese after the monastery of St. john in Patmos. It lies on the southern tip of Symi in a secluded, sandy bay. Dedicated to Archangel Michael it has a solid gold icon of the saint in the main church, a host of dedications, wall paintings and a wooden iconostasis of exceptional artistry.

GETTING TO SYMI

GETTING TO SYMI
An island with crystal waters, pebbled beaches and many islets, Symi pleasantly surprises the visitor with its plain, yet aristocratic and wild beauty. Symi belongs to Dodecanese islands complex and lies 24 nautical miles NW of Rhodes and 255 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus. It is very close to the Asia Minor coast, its surface is 68 sq Km and disposes 85 Km of coastline. On Symi you will enjoy the sea more than on any other island of the Dodecanese, its mild climate and days of sunshine begin in May and in October. As you glimpse the perfectly formed harbour of Symi (Gialos) for the first time, you are confronted with a beautiful picture postcard Venetian village. Wonderfully well—preserved house huddled together cling to the steeply rising hills beyond. Symi has a true romantic charm enhanced by the lack of any high - rise hotel developments that can be found on other islands. On Symi ,you will enjoy beautiful bays and pebbled beaches that are best reached by small boats that leave frequently.
The picturesque ness, the traditional architecture and the neoclassical house with their pediments and pebbled yards, are the predominant elements characterizing the island. The church of Panaghia tou Evangelismou stands on the right of Symi port welcoming boats and visitors while a bit further you will observe the islet of Nimos and the summer resort of Emporios or Nimporios, at a walking distance from the port . Walking down the port’s (Gialos) central road , you can admire the Municipal Clock Tower, both the Police and Post Office buildings, ”Michalaki” (the young fisherman statue by the famous Symiot sculptor C. Valsamis) and “Katerinetes”, the mansion where the surrender of the Dodecanese islands to the Allies was officially signed marking the beginning of their union to the Greek mainland. At the edge of the port you will also admire the Monument of the Fallen Soldiers, the recently renovated Naval Museum and the church of Giannis with its stone carved bell tower and its magnificent pebbled yard.
